The Department of Microbiology provides comprehensive laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases using advanced microbiological, immunological and molecular diagnostic techniques to ensure accurate patient care and infection control.
About the Microbiology
The Department of Microbiology is equipped with advanced automated diagnostic systems to ensure rapid and accurate identification of infectious agents. The laboratory utilizes the VITEK® 2 system for automated bacterial identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing. For blood culture investigations, two BD BACTEC™ FX-40 automated systems are available, employing fluorescent technology to detect microbial growth in blood culture bottles, enabling early diagnosis and timely clinical intervention.
The department also offers advanced serological and immunological testing using modern analytical platforms. Detection of Dengue IgM/IgG antibodies, Dengue NS1 antigen, COVID-19 IgG antibody, and Scrub Typhus IgM antibody is performed using ELISA technology with Alere Microplate Reader and Washer. In addition, the Cobas e 411 immunoassay analyzer, based on Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) technology, performs qualitative and quantitative testing for HIV, HBsAg, HCV, HAV, Procalcitonin, and other biomarkers. Procalcitonin testing, which assists clinicians in selecting appropriate antimicrobial therapy, is available with a rapid turnaround time of approximately 30 minutes at one of the most affordable costs in the city.
